“I have known Cindy Wilson with Viking Kitchens since 2005. She and I have done so many wonderful things together, and we’ve become so very close: we sort of read each other’s thoughts. She’s an amazing person, and she’s just so good, we work so very, very well together and…she’s a wonderful, wonderful part of Viking Kitchens, and I enjoy every moment working with her!”—Designer Carolyn Mackie
For this kitchen remodel, homeowner Sue Gilbert called upon interior designer Carolyn Mackie of Carolyn’s Designs, LLC to rework a dark and cramped 1990s vibe. Carolyn has worked with Viking Kitchens designer Cindy Wilson for many years and is her kitchen designer of choice. Together, they created an open, light-filled space that is a curated balance of New England style with modern design.
An original peninsula was blocking access to the work surfaces from the dining area. It was removed, and a large island added. This new layout simplifies prep in the work area, and provides easy access to the deck for entertaining. Gracing the base cabinets, an arched island top creates a breakfast bar with room for the whole family, and which makes for a cosy space to get together when friends and family visit.
We chose Diamond Distinctions Cabinetry with Davis Slab doors in Coconut for lightness. This color complements many details of the kitchen design, including grey floor tiles, the granite countertops, and the breakfast bar seating.
Behind the island, we replaced an inconvenient pantry with tall utility cabinets to maximize storage and keep the busy family organized. At the far end of the wall, a cramped desk area has been replaced with a beverage nook complete with wine rack. We chose Diamond Distinctions Cabinetry with Davis Slab doors to match, but changed the color to a Maple Seal for contrast.
Carolyn was very pleased with the results: “What really made me incredibly happy…was the day we finished and my client got to see her brand new kitchen. And what was so pleasing for me was just to see the look on her face when she walked into this gorgeous kitchen and saw it for the very first time complete. She was so taken aback and so very pleased with the way things turned out, and that to me was the entire project in a nutshell!”
